On October 3, 2020, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, presented the nation with the nation’s pride, the visionary project of Atal Tunnel. The 9.02-kilometer-long Atal Tunnel, which is strategically significant and goes under the ‘Rohtang Pass,’ was built on the Manali -Manali Leh Highway amid the hard conditions of cold temperatures in exceedingly difficult terrain.

Before visiting at here you have to take a rohtang permit. The tunnel travels beneath the Rohtang Pass. Prior to the construction of the tunnel, the roadway was closed for the entirety of the winter season, cutting off Lahaul and Spiti from the mainland. This isolation lasted for six months. As a result of the construction of this tunnel, the distance between Manali and Sarchu has been cut by 46 kilometers, and the journey time has been cut by between four and five hours. This has made it possible to maintain connectivity between Manali and Leh regardless of the weather.

The construction of this tunnel, which is located in the Pir Panjal Mountains of the Himalayas, has been as much of a test of technical and engineering skills as it has been of the endurance of humans and the effectiveness of machines. It was built in incredibly hard and difficult terrain, in which the temperatures during the winters dropped to a bone-chilling -25 degrees while the temperatures within the tunnel regularly climbed to about 45 degrees. The Karmyogis of BRO were able to successfully overcome a number of the most significant obstacles that arose during the construction process. These obstacles included fragile geology and challenges such as seepage of Seri Nala, which resulted in the flooding of the Atal Tunnel. Other obstacles included high overburden and excessive snowfall.

In keeping with its motto, “Linking Places Connecting People,” the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has created an engineering masterpiece in the form of the Atal Tunnel near Rohtang. The tunnel has not only been a blessing for the people who live in the Lahaul and Spiti District in the state of Himachal Pradesh, but it has also provided the armed forces with a strategic advantage by offering an alternative link to the crucial Ladakh Sector. The region has observed a surge in the number of tourists arriving at a rate that has never been seen before, and in a little over a year, both the valley and the state have seen growth in the socio-economic spheres. The Atal Tunnel is poised to play a pivotal part in the continued growth and development of the region in the years to come.
